- National and international research has consistently confirmed the relationship between literacy levels and life outcomes. As well as being fundamental to school success, literacy competence impacts an individual's quality of life, chances of employment and financial security, personal autonomy and self-esteem. It is a requisite for political, cultural, and social power, and social capital. Teaching students to be literate is central to the purpose of schools and is the responsibility of every teacher. The discussions in this chapter are divided into five sections: setting the scene, underlying difficulties, components of successful literacy, general instructional approaches and specific strategies for teaching literacy, and integrating literacy across key learning areas. Readers will gain an awareness of how these key ideas are interrelated and insight into understanding and supporting literacy competence in all students.
